There was a War known at the time as The Great War (nowadays we call it something else). After this war, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The treaty basically said that The Great War was all Germany's fault. Because of that, an evil dictator rose to power in Germany.
The answer to this question is another name for The Great War.
